Condensation in the Tumble Dryer

Have you noticed condensation in your tumble dryer?

When moisture builds up in your dryer, it can reduce the effectiveness of your machine leading to damp rather than dry clothes.

Condensation in the dryer isn’t always something to worry about. However, in some cases, it can lead to serious problems.

Here’s what to check to identify and fix the issue.

Check the Machine’s External Ventilation

Not all tumble dryers have external vents, but this is a good place to start if your machine does. If the vent is clogged with debris, or if it wasn't installed correctly then the machine will not vent properly. A good rule of thumb is to regularly clean and inspect the dryer venting system to ensure proper airflow. Clear any debris or lint obstructing the vents before each use.

Alternatively, if your vented tumble dryer is newly installed then the vent installation may be at fault. Some professional adjustments will be needed to fix the problem. A booster fan can also improve ventilation efficiency.

Is The Machine Overloaded?

When you purchase a tumble dryer you should take note of the manufacturer's instructions with regards to load limits. That’s because if your dryer is overloaded with too many clothes, the machine will not work as well.

Furthermore, all those extra clothes also generate excess moisture which can linger in your machine. This will impede airflow and trap the moisture inside.

The only way to solve this specific issue is to opt for lighter loads of clothes when using the dryer. For items that hold moisture water well such as towels or bedding, it’s better to separate these to promote better drying.

Improper Installation

We’ve covered the potential for the vents on vented tumble dryers to be installed incorrectly.

However, the reason behind condensation in the dryer could also be down to the installation of the appliance itself.

In particular, placing the dryer in a cupboard or confined space with inadequate ventilation can create condensation issues.

If moisture doesn’t have a way of escaping, it will remain trapped in the space. That’s why all tumble dryer types must be installed in a well-ventilated area with sufficient space around the machine.

Opting for the right tumble dryer cabinet design can make all the difference. The TUV-certified cupboards from Washtower are specifically designed for both dryers and washing machines.

Excess Humidity Levels

Depending on the time of year, the humidity levels naturally rise and fall in your home. You may also notice moisture droplets gathering on your windows, and you may also find excessive moisture has collected in your dryer.

To reduce condensation in the tumble dryer resulting from high moisture levels in the air, you need to ensure the room has adequate ventilation. Ideally, by using an extractor fan and opening a window to allow fresh air to flow into the room. In addition, using a dehumidifier can reduce humidity levels in the laundry room.

If you air dry some clothes inside (i.e. delicates) then also be aware this will add even more moisture to the room. So it’s essential to keep an eye out to not only avoid condensation in the dryer but also related issues such as dampness or mould.

Damaged Door Seal

Like many of your appliances, tumble dryers have a seal around them which is prone to wear and tear.

Once a seal around a tumble dryer starts to fail, your clothes will take longer to dry as the performance of the dryer decreases. All the while, humid air from the dryer can escape into the room causing condensation.

If you suspect a faulty door seal is the cause of the condensation in your tumble dryer or elsewhere in the room, it’s time to call in a professional. They will need to disconnect the appliance to be able to inspect and repair the seal.

Condensation In The Tumble Dryer FAQs

Is A Condenser Dryer Better Than A Tumble Dryer?

It’s all a case of what you are specifically looking for as a user. Condenser tumble dryers work slightly differently from conventional tumble dryers. That’s because they collect the moisture into a chamber which needs to be emptied, rather than venting the moisture outside. In terms of solving condensation, a condenser dryer may prove to be a better choice so long as the humidity levels and ventilation of the room are adequate.

Why Is My Dryer Leaving Everything Damp?

If the reason why you are noticing condensation in the dryer is related to the dryer's performance (i.e. the dryer is not drying clothes properly) then this points to a clogged air vent. However, if the air vent is not clogged, you may just be dealing with a malfunctioning machine. Consult your manufacturer on what to do next if your unsatisfactory drying results cannot be pinpointed to one of the above reasons.

Do Heat Pump Dryers Need to be Vented?

No. Unlike vented dryers, heat pump dryers don’t require external ventilation. This can provide more flexibility with regards to where you install a heat pump dryer. That said, they should still be installed in a ventilated room. You will also still require access to the back of the machine.

Can You Put A Tumble Dryer In A Cupboard?

Yes! That’s so long as the cupboard is purpose-built to house a tumble dryer and you follow the manufacturer's recommendations regarding ventilation of the machine. At Washtower, you’ll find endless cabinet designs which can house both a washing machine and a tumble dryer safely.

Can I Put A Condenser Dryer In A Cupboard?

You can put a condenser dryer in a cupboard, so long as the installation meets all the requirements for ventilation around the machine. Plus ease of access to perform maintenance or repairs. Overall, it’s essential to ensure the tumble dryer complies with all the applicable regulations to avoid electrical safety issues or excess humidity in the room. If in doubt, always consult a professional before installing a condenser dryer in a cupboard.

How To Stop Condensation In Laundry Room?

Generally, it is right to assume that there is some kind of ventilation issue either with the machine or within the room as a whole when you notice condensation. Following all the above tips and also purchasing a dehumidifier can help eliminate excess moisture so that condensation won’t form.
